For about the first five years of my running life I was a 3 hour plus runner in each successive SCMM.
It is only when I started reading and filling myself with knowledge about running that I slowly started improving, to the current PB of 2:18.
Even if you have a good coach, he can only train you as well as the feedback he receives. If however you become knowledgable, you can improve exponentially since you are the judge of your own feedback.
