The Cherrapunjee Marathon(TM)

July 17th2015

Running in the Abode of Clouds

www.cherramarathon.com

The first “timed event” marathon in Northeast India is now accepting entries. The Cherrapunjee Marathon is held in one of the most picturesque landscapes in India – the historic Shillong to Cherrapunjee route – passing through mist-covered valleys, quaint villages, over rolling hills and past waterfalls in Meghalaya, the Abode of Clouds.

Participants are likely to find themselves running through clouds that usually blanket the cool green hills of Cherrapunjee.

Cherrapunjee still holds the all-time record for receiving the heaviest rainfall on Earth in a single year – 1042 inches of rain! To figure how humongous that is, consider that the average rainfall in India is between 30-59 inches. To celebrate all those inches, the Cherrapunjee Marathon aims to attract 1042 runners to participate in the Full Marathon (42.2 km), Half Marathon (21.1 km) and 10 km run. The big day is July 17th, 2015.

Although we consider running in Cherrapunjee its own reward, there are various cash-prize categories for those who care about such things. The Elite Professional Race will see participation from some of India’s top marathoners, who have confirmed their participation. There also an Open Category and Age-categories for those between 35-50 years, and above 50 years. In addition, for all the women of Meghalaya domicile, winners in each age category for the half and the full marathon get sponsored for the Bengaluru Marathon to be held in October. This is an inclusive event and will be open to all including persons with disabilities.

Although running is the main event, the Cherrapunjee marathon is not just about running. Participants also help tackle two important issues affecting our country today – the destruction of our fragile environment, and ethnic/ religious intolerance. By participating in this event, runners help these larger causes by:

·       Creating awareness about the need to preserve the ecology of the most fragile but picturesque routes in the Khasi Hills.

·       Giving a hand to sustainable tourism by preserving the experience of the run – thus preserving the environment.

·       Promoting awareness of a shared humanity. Runners are a community that cuts across communities. By their participation, they bring peoples of India and the world closer together through a healthy, peaceful shared passion – running.

So come and take part, or at least spread the word.
