Sports Coaching Programs (with Athletics as one of the specializations) are offered by Sports Authority of India (SAI) through its 2 Academic Wings namely Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NSNIS), Patiala and the Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education (LNCPE) at Thiruvananthapuram.
National Institute of Sports, Patiala was established by the Government of India in 1961 with the objective of developing sports in India on scientific lines and to train coaches in different sports disciplines. The Institute was renamed Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NSNIS), Patiala in 1973. With the formation of Sports Authority of India in 1984, the erstwhile Society for National Institutes of Physical Education & Sports (SNIPES) consisting of NSNIS, Patiala and its Centres and the 2 physical Education Colleges namely Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education, located at Gwalior and Thiruvananthapuram respectively were merged with SAI in 1987 so as to adopt an integrated approach towards promotion and development of sports.
